About Us
Qtopia Sydney opened in February 2024 as a place to share the stories of the Queer community in Australia — past, present and future.
Qtopia Sydney is a storyteller – we tell stories through exhibitions, performances and programs, all designed to celebrate, commemorate and most importantly, educate.
As storytellers, we bring LGBTQIA+ histories out of the sidelines and into the light — from breakthroughs in medicine and law to art, activism and everyday life. These are stories of courage, contribution and resilience that deserve to be heard.
Qtopia’s origin began nearly 40 years ago with the vision of Professor David Cooper — a space to remember those affected by HIV/AIDS. That vision lived on through his wife Dorrie and our founder, David Polson AM, one of Australia’s earliest HIV/AIDS trial participants. Their passion, and the care of a dedicated community, turned that dream into reality.
Today, Qtopia Sydney is the largest Centre for Queer History and Culture in the world, spanning over 1,750 m² across three sites. More than a museum, it’s an interactive space where stories educate, connect and empower.
We focus on education because understanding builds respect, breaks down prejudice and encourages everyone to stand proudly as themselves — knowing there is a community behind them.
When you visit, we hope you leave with empathy, inspiration and a deeper appreciation of the diverse experiences that shape our shared history.
Qtopia Sydney is a registered charity, driven by community, compassion and the belief that every story matters

Our Vision
We envision a world where kindness, empathy and understanding are our collective default position. Where our future leaders take everyone equally into consideration when decision making. Where LGBTQIA+ , and other affinity groups’, stories are valued, understood and celebrated — not hidden or forgotten.
By sharing Queer histories and lived experiences, Qtopia Sydney aims to foster empathy, challenge prejudice and inspire pride, connection and belonging for generations to come.
Our Mission
Qtopia Sydney exists to preserve, share and amplify the stories of Australia’s Queer community — past, present and future.
Through exhibitions, performances, education and storytelling, we honour resilience, celebrate contribution and ensure these stories are accessible to everyone.

Education & Impact
Education is at the heart of everything we do.
By creating opportunities for learning and dialogue, Qtopia Sydney helps break down misunderstanding, build respect and empower people to live authentically — knowing they are not alone.
Every story shared is a step toward greater inclusion and understanding.
